Zentangles – 101 Class & Diva Challenge Wk 223

Package to Romania

Sending over some <3

This little stash of paper goodies is going to a wonderful tangler friend in Romania that I have met over Swapbot 🙂

I am constantly impressed at how Zentangle has become such a large part of my life, in such a short time.. and how it has allowed me to make firm friends with so many people that I’d never otherwise get to connect with!

June Zentangle 101 Class in Singapore

I had the privilege of teaching my very first Zentangle 101 class last Saturday.  I had spent many weeks preparing for it, and wow, it was an amazing experience in itself 🙂

The class went so well, I was SO pleased! So proud of what we accomplished in just an afternoon! I basically learnt a lot about myself as a CZT as well.

Here are some photos from the class… (as always, clicking on the images below will take you to Flickr)

Diva Challenge 223 – Umble

This week the challenge is to play with Umble, an official tangle.

I was quite ambitious with my first attempt and made so many mistakes that I decided to colour all my strokes in with a Graphic 1 pen to create a thick border 😛 It hid everything, nicely, and I then used a white Sakura Gelly Roll to tangle Tidings over it. For my Umble I then used a combination of Black (01), Purple, Pink, Orange and Yellow 05 Microns.. Then out came the Sakura Gelly Roll again, to add Keeko and Shattuck on top of the Umble strands..

For my second attempt, which was tangled on a Bijou tile, I wanted to try tangling Umble (Umbling?) within a teardrop shape to see how it looks.. I think I definitely need more practice 😛 (……………. and I also forgot to shade :P)

Zentangles – New tangle Cabbit and Diva Challenge Wk 222

It has been a busy week, and a very warm one here. I spend the days working on class materials and trying to stay as cool as possible (but failing!). So much to do, yet I have successfully squeezed in a fair amount of tangling.

Here we go… (as always, clicking on the images will take you to Flickr)

Tiles for Kelly

Tiles for Kelly

This little package is enroute to Kelly Barone, CZT. She has recently opened a new studio and has invited CZTs from around the world to send her tiles with a Z-string.

She has a wall in her studio which she intends to cover with all our tiles 🙂 What a great idea! I think that could easily become the feature wall in her studio 🙂

I went a bit overboard (too many different tangles!!) with my first tile, pictured here with a simple card I made, and I ended up sending her two tiles instead so she could decide on which would be more appropriate for her use.

I do really like how this tile turned out though..  Perhaps I should re-explore the use of Z-strings! 🙂 Here is a closer look.. Amongst other tangles, I used Ipso by fellow CZT 18, Jennifer Hohensteiner, for my border.

Tiles for Kelly

I’d met Jennifer through Flickr and had absolutely no idea we were attending the same seminar, till after! We connected ‘properly’ finally over Facebook.

Ipso was one of the very first tangles I’d learnt when tangling. It is so great to know the person who came up with it 🙂 It adds meaning to my drawing experience.

Ipso is a very fun tangle, and I always add ‘eyes’ to it. I think it makes it look cute, friendly and cheerful.

So – Kelly actually asked for a simple tile with just a couple of tangles on a Z-string. My first tile was so complex, I felt it might not fit her concept.

I then made up a second tile, using just the Z-string with LOTs of light and space (as can be seen, lol!), only tangling up the Z.

Tiles for Kelly

As it turned out, this tile too, looked really pretty!

I might have to duplicate it for my own collection sometime.

I am now putting together more ZIA and Zentangle tiles so that I can feature these at classes or at my MAAD booths. I had previously been giving tiles and ZIAs away as mementoes and swaps. Snapshots were all I’d kept, on Pinterest and Flickr.

I also figured that in our high humidity, our paper items don’t store very well. I am now trying to find ways to preserve them all that won’t break the bank 😛

Meanwhile… here are some of my recent pieces…

Cabbit – a new tangle

Last week, I finally put up the step outs to my tangle Cabbit on the Tangled Pursuits site and FB page.

I have been drawing Cabbit since July 2014, but I always had doubts about it being a true tangle so I never dared to publish it until recently. In its basic form, Cabbit uses repetitive, slightly rounded ‘M’ shapes.

[ Please feel free to use the step outs to recreate Cabbit in your tangles. However I reserve my rights to these images and they should not be copied or reproduced. Thank you! ]

Tangleated, one may choose to swap out the Ms for any base shape to create different ‘animals’ such as cats, bears, hamsters or aliens 😛

Here is a real life Cabbit example 😉 featuring our own hamster pups and here’s a complete Cabbit infestation…

Diva Challenge 222 – Colours of the Rainbow

This week the challenge is to incorporate colours into our tiles.

Because I often tangle to counter pain or anxiety, I am often tangling on the bed, before bedtime. Hence, due to a limited amount of lap-space, I am not a big fan of using colour in my pieces.

However, I have been asked about holding kids’ Z classes recently, so I ran out to purchase a bucket of Faber Castell connector markers. I will be very likely using these pens for future classes, so I appreciated this opportunity to test them out! I’d also been recently given a packet of colourful copic (yum!) – but these ones are finer and I will be saving for myself.

I’ll admit it – I had fun with these. More than I thought I’d have 🙂

Diva Challenge Week 222 - Colours of the Rainbow

I stuck to my “go-to” tangles for this piece. Cabbit, Crescent Moon, Flux, Indyrella, Pokeroot, Printemps a little bit of Mooka and one of my feathery feathers.

I am so pleased that the glitter managed to show up on this photo! Yay!!

I sign off now to visit all the other Diva Challenge entries 🙂

P.S. Thanks for all the visits and comments. They are always much appreciated ❤

Zentangles – Tangled Pursuits & Diva Challenge Wks 214 & 221

Tangled Pursuits

It has been a long time since my last post on this blog, and this is my first since becoming a CZT [ after completing Seminar 18 in April ]. After the seminar, I spent 3 weeks in Japan and finally got back home on 5 May. It often seemed like everything needed urgent attention and all at once. These past few weeks have simply flown by. One of the cats was also ill and I had also received a large handmade custom order. [ These pieces have since gone up on the FB album 🙂 ]

Sometime during the mess that was the month of May, I managed, not without multiple re-edits, to put up my CZT business website and FB page ^^

tangled pursuits

It took me a really long time to come up with a name before finally deciding upon ‘Tangled Pursuits’ because like much of everything I do these days, Zentangle is part of my development as an artisan and crafter. In a good way, I am finding myself tangled up in creating and crafting like never before. This entire creative experience is an on-going adventure for me, and I am relentlessly in pursuit of a better, more soul-satisfying and ‘mindful’ lifestyle.

Last Friday I also had a MAAD Pyjamas booth and used this opportunity to feature official Zentangle products. Most of the people attending had never heard of Zentangle, save for two ladies, and we chatted at length about the method.

Diva Challenge Week 221

I hope to end my hiatus from the Diva Challenge with this week’s post 🙂

This week’s challenge is very inspirationally titled, “Beads of Courage“, after the Beads of Courage non-profit organisation in Canada. This cause was created “for children who are coping with serious illnesses by helping them to record, tell and own their stories of courage through beads”.

I am always grateful for having discovered the Diva Challenge, especially when I participate in challenges that encourage me to take time out from my day (week!) and spend time thinking about meaningful causes. Causes that I’d otherwise never even heard of. Beads (especially pretty and shiny glass ones!) are close to my heart – I am a crafter after all, and reading about this beautiful idea of a cause, really touched something within me more so than the usual challenges.

I incorporated ‘glass beads’ onto a heart which needs mending (early this morning, I had a panic attack and needed some mending, myself. Mending in the form of tea, honey and tangles!).. I did not stick to any particular string, just a shape in mind. I kept it simple with just a few tangles: Barney, Beadlines, Cadent (in silver), and lots of Tipple with hidden hearts in the negative space 🙂 And I finished it (for now!) off with a pop of shading and glitter 🙂

Here we go… (as always, clicking on the images will take you to Flickr)

Another shot from an angle to (hopefully) show a bit more glitter ^^

And.. last but not least.. I do realise I have a tile from the Earth Day Challenge Week 214 that I’ve not put up yet. Before it gets lost in the big, virtual mess otherwise known as my archives.. here it is 🙂

Updates for March – June 2015

I hope this post finds each of you well after a week of feasting and merry making! 🙂 BLESSED LUNAR NEW YEAR!! Hope you stay ‘yang’ and healthy always!

Here are some updates from my corner of the world.

Hamster Reservations Closed

Thank you for all the love you have shown our little Hamstery over the last twenty years, in one way or another 🙂

A short while ago, we announced that reservations were open for our hamster family’s 8th generation. Since then, we have been blessed with the arrival of two healthy litters of Roborovskis from Hazelnut Frappe and Almond Roca.

We have enjoyed tremendous favour and support and are pleased to report that both our litters have been ‘over-subscribed’. With full hearts, we are closing reservations for the time being. If you have already been placed onto our waiting list, this announcement does not affect you.

Here are some photos of the first litter for your viewing pleasure 🙂

Zentangles – Diva Challenge Wk 201 – 204 & Zenuari compilation

Sometime in the last weeks of January, I got really tied up with a bunch of new projects and some custom orders. I relish each of these milestones, and looking back at my crafting year always reminds me of how far I have come and fills me with a sense of gratitude and thanksgiving. So despite these entries being late, I am glad to be back with them.

For example, I ended up getting so busy that I have still not completed the last 14 days of the Zenuari challenge. I am going to leave it as that and put up the ones which I have done, but I don’t think I will ever get a chance to go back to the missing entries and finish them off.

I might have felt a sense of distress at not having completed the entire month’s challenge, had I held on to my previous self. Alas, I have actively decided not to lose sleep over such things anymore.

I have come to the realization that one can only manage to do so much. It is better to accomplish what I can in my time, with my best effort, than try to accomplish everything and not succeed at anything, in the end.

Day 17 – Tangleations

Here’s Sanibelle in a linear and spherical form, paired with Tipple, Huggins and Flux. Also added a little bit of fun with hearts within the negative space 🙂 [as always, clicking on the images will take you to Flickr]

Day 19 – Let someone else draw the string

The D.H. drew this string for me and I was quite stumped for a long time. I kept rotating the tile for a long time 😛 In the end Sanibelle (again!!!), Meringue and Hollibaugh flowed out of my pen 🙂 Flux, Knot Rickz, Auraleah, Crescent Moon leaves added a bit of variety to the tangled pile.

Diva Challenge Wk 201 – Moebius Day

At University in Australia, I once had a friend who suffered from the Moebius syndrome. Unfortunately, he did not like talking about his condition, and we all learnt not to ask questions, even the well-intended ones. Despite his physical appearances, I always thought him brilliant, and I always respected the boundaries he put up when he was with me. This was a decade ago, now, and drawing up this challenge did make me think of him and my other University friends, all of whom I have lost touch with, since returning to Singapore.

For the challenge I used a strip of kraft paper, silver gel pen and my Brown 05 Micron. It was my first time ever making a moebius strip!

Diva Challenge Wk 202 – Duotangle: Chebucto vs. Copada

For this challenge I feel the need to confess that I really hated my resulting tile 😛 I had never drawn Chebucto before this, and I had only played with Copada twice. I omitted the lines to make Copada less ‘linear’, and I tried it in a sphere as well, to give it a twist.

Oh well.. Here goes 😛

Diva Challenge Wk 202 - Duotangle Chebucto vs. Copada

Diva Challenge Wk 203 – UMT Athizi

I had a sudden thirst for colour one day and decided to lightly shade a tile with red, orange and yellow. I left it alone for a spell, not really knowing how to proceed next 😛 When Athizi by Seven, was issued as a challenge, I decided to use this shaded tile and make it as simple and uncomplicated as I could.

At the time, I was going through a few days of uncertainty and my brain was feeling very cluttered and I really only wanted to ‘switch off’. I didn’t want a string either, so I just decided to let Athizi flow on its own in a monotangle.

Diva Challenge Wk 203 UMT Athizi

I found that I really enjoyed Athizi, and I will probably use it again soon.

Diva Challenge Wk 204 – Valentangle

This week’s challenge is one that I have enjoyed, even though I do not celebrate Valentine’s Day, myself. Here in Singapore (and probably elsewhere in the world), Valentine’s Day is entirely a commercial event. I applaud those who go to great lengths to shower their loved ones with proclamations of love and endearment, but I have actually had no interest in taking part in Valentine’s Day since I first started dating anybody 😛 Love however, ought to be celebrated daily. And it is with this mindset that I began on my tile.

I enjoy Hollibaugh and have used it often in my tangles, yet I had never tried it within an enclosed shape. In January, I learnt this at a class and I thought to give it a spin for my Valentangle.

Here is my tile from that class…

And here is my entry for this week’s challenge 🙂 My theme was lace and flowers, pairing Beadlines and Hollibaugh for the lace and Trentwith roses, lightly shaded.

And.. I am off 🙂

Zentangles – Diva Challenge Wk 200 & Zenuari 2nd Week

How are we halfway into January 2015? Well I am still kinda in a post Christmas haze…! There’s much to do and tangle and I certainly hope I get out of my sloth mode really soon xD

Day 8 – Background Wash

I struggled with this one, for quite a long time. I don’t really paint anything except my own nails, so I did play with the idea of using nail polish for my background wash. I actually attempted to do so on a few tiles but I ruined them once my Microns hit the painted surface xD Eventually I used a colour pen, which was supposedly yellow 😛 It came out bright orange, oh well.

Anyway here it is.. I cheated – I tweaked it down a notch using my photo editor xD I tangled up Cockles & Mussels into my ING and embellished with Mooka & Kelp. Pretty ordinary, save for the garish hues.

Day 9 – Winter

The last time I’d experienced a proper Winter with ice and snow was in South Korea, in 2011. As much as I love Winter, the cold, and snowflakes, I live in the tropics and it was kinda difficult to think about Winter for this challenge because the days are bright and blustery here.

I ended up drawing a mini-dala using Fife as the beginning of my snowflake. This was probably not the best choice, because my snowflake looks too much like a flower xD

Zenuari Challenge Day 9 - Winter

Day 10 – Blind String

I love blind string challenges and this one was no exception ^^

Flux and Sand Swirl literally flowed out of my pen as I did this one. However, I spent a LONG time trying to think of how to fill up the oval space, and almost wanted to use Meringue to do so 😛 But I left it in the end because I thought it looked quite cute just like that, with the empty, airy, centre 🙂

Day 11 –  Zendala Sunday

Whilst catching up with my aunt and cousin sometime last week, we chanced upon a craft shop clearance corner. I found a few pieces of very pretty scrapbooking paper which I thought would make great tangle surfaces.

Although not as tempting as the Shikishi board I played with last week, this piece certainly had its own charm. I tangled a large ‘dala with a Cross in the centre, using a teal coloured pen.

The colours weren’t exactly what I had in my mind, so I again, tweaked the colours with editing software. And voila ^^ I am very pleased!

Day 12 – Biggify

Since I usually draw my Sand Swirls tiny, I picked this to use, large.

Zenuari Challenge Day 12 - Biggify

I should have used my Blind String tile from above for a better size comparison photo 😛 It would have been nice to see tiny and large Sand Swirls side by side 😛 Oh well. Zenuari Challenge Day 12 - Biggify

Day 13 – Use tangles that start with your initials

I picked Dust Bunnies & Lily Padz for this one – and my, they make a cute couple! Don’t they?

Zenuari Challenge Day 13 - Initialise

Tangled on old book paper, mounted on a postcard blank.

Day 14 – Circles

This is actually tomorrow’s challenge 😛 I figured I’d not be able to get to it in time anyway, so I decided to do the challenge and upload it together with this post ^^

What better than to marry Printemps and Cruffle? I couldn’t leave out Tipple, so I tangled some in as well ^^

Zenuari Challenge Day 14 - Circles

Diva Challenge Wk 200 – Bi-Zen-tennial Celebration

It’s the 200th challenge over at the Diva’s! Wow 🙂 I cannot help but feel a sense of awe at some tanglers who have completed ALL 200 challenges! It is quite an acheivement to celebrate, indeed!

For this challenge we were to pick our “mac-&cheese” tangle, in other words, our ‘go-to’ or most-often-used tangle, and feature it in a monotangle. Somewhere on the tile, the number 200 must be visible.

I picked Trentwith – it was a toss up between Trentwith, Mooka and Sanibelle 😛 I added a few spots of colour, just for fun.

Zentangles – Diva Challenge Wk 199 & Zenuari 1st Week

Greetings, this is my first ZT-related post this year. I hope everyone is well 🙂

Although we’re only just a week into 2015, this year looks set to be a year of busy. My schedule has been penciled into, as far as mid-April already!

I harbour a lot of hopes and anticipation for this year and I believe that it will be a year of restoration and new beginnings in my life. I am sensing the reversal of the tides in my life, and I am very pleased to count my participation in the upcoming CZT Training #18 as one of the few blessings strewn across my path.

I am so pleased that some of you who are attending CZT #18 have reached out to me in friendship – Thank you! – it makes the adventure (I am travelling solo across the globe to be there) less daunting, as I look forward to putting faces behind the names.

This January, I will also be attending my first ZT 101 class.

Sometime around late December, I contacted newly-minted Singapore CZT Mabel Yap and found that we just ‘clicked’. I had, much earlier in the year, contacted the first two Singaporean CZTs (Mabel is the third) about classes and did not receive any response. No matter, really, all is well 🙂 Mabel was completely warm and encouraging and to my delight, she invited me to attend her first ever class, which she was organising for friends-only! I am beyond excited 😛

I should stop my gushing here, but I am deeply encouraged, by what I see as ‘progress’, and equally elated that things are looking up after so long  2015 is looking set to be one exciting year ^^

Zenuari Challenge Week 1 Compilation

Last year through Swapbot, I met two lovely ladies, Anoeska and Aly from the Netherlands, who simply LOVE to tangle. Across the many swaps and miles between us, we have struck up a firm friendship, which I appreciate because I have no immediate friends here in my circle that like tangling, if at all.

Anoeska has issued a challenge she ingeniously calls Zenuari which is a daily challenge for the month of January 2015. I nearly missed this challenge due to my post-Christmas food coma recovery period, and Aly was very sweet to tag me over Instagram and this caught my attention even though I was certainly quite out of it 😛

Do join us if it catches your fancy! Here is the link to Anoeska’s Zenuari blog entry 🙂

Here is a small compilation of my first week at Zenuari ^^ [clicking on the images will take you to Flickr]

Day 1 – 2015

I was so excited that I had been given a shiny new Intuos Pen and Touch Tablet for Christmas, I decided to use it to kick off the Zenuari challenge 😛 I don’t know if I regret the decision xD My digital tangles leave a lot wanting xD But here it is nonetheless xD
Zenuari Challenge Day 1 - 2015

Day 2 – Stars

I’d wanted sparkly, so I used some old nail polish to create the back drop for my star, not realising that the miniscule sparkles would not show up on camera xD So here the background looks kinda dull xD I also cheated for my string – I could not, for the life of me manage to draw a decent looking star! I had to resort to using a cookie cutter instead, but who cares, it works! 😛

Zenuari Challenge Day 2 - Stars

Zenuari Challenge Day 2 - Stars
Day 3 – Official tangles only

Feeling ambitious, and a bit overly confident, I decided to try out my largest ever ZIA attempt. For me, it is a major feat because of its sheer size. I was drawn to tangling mainly because of the small tile sizes, and I was happy and content, for the longest time to stick to 3″ and 3.5″ square tiles. Even when I ventured on to create ZIA postcards, I still stuck to the official tile size as a guide 😛 Enter the gorgeous, archival quality Shikishi board! My, I couldn’t wait to start on it, the moment I laid my eyes on it 😛

Traditionally, Chinese and Japanese calligraphers mounted their works on boards such as these for posterity. These boards were sturdy, beautifully hand-crafted and painstakingly gold-leafed. I am sure modern processes have replaced the hand-crafted ones with machines, but there is no doubt about it – the paper is still very heavy weight, and utterly beautiful.

We can still purchase these boards locally in Singapore, through the Japanese bookstore Kinokuniya and its stationary arm, A’n’BC. I got mine, measuring 9 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ (24.2cm x 27.2cm), approx 2mm thick, with gold leaf bordering, at SGD2.10 a board (which I consider a steal). The Shikishi boards come in different sizes, but they were not available that particular day (nor did it make any difference to me, for I was already infatuated.)

Back at home, I became a little intimidated by the thought of tangling directly onto the beautiful, unblemished surface of the board (people actually do so, just google) and so I started off on Kraft paper where I drew leaves into my string.

Since we were to use only official tangles, I took it to mean official, Zentangle-HQ-issued tangles. I used 17 tangles in all, learning some of them for the very first time.

In all, it took me a couple of days to fill my string, after which I mounted the kraft paper onto the Shikishi ^^

Zenuari Challenge Day 3 - Official Tangles Only

Zenuari Challenge Day 3 - Official Tangles Only

I know this isn’t really LARGE and I am sure lots and lots of people have tangled up even larger pieces, but it is a major feat for me 🙂 I am ecstatic to have managed to pull it off!

Below is my shikishi board pictured with official Zentangle and Bijou tiles for a quick size comparison.

Zenuari Challenge Day 3 - Official Tangles Only

Achievement unlocked!

Day 4 –  No strings

After the mental (over)assertion that was Day 3’s challenge, I decided to stick to smaller tiles this time 😛 Groovy is a tangle I haven’t played with for awhile, so here it is without any strings, Flux, and some shading. I also used one of my tortillions for the first time, but I cannot seem to get the hang of it 😛

Zenuari Challenge Day 4 - No Strings

Day 5 – Black out

Coming in handy is this heavy weight chipboard ATC blank which arrived to me in three colours, white, kraft and black. I’d found uses for the white and kraft ones, but had not tried out the black, till this piece 🙂

My Sakura Gelly Roll proved a cantankerous companion, even though I was using it the way ZT HQ had suggested, hence some lines were more heavily weighted than others 😛

Zenuari Challenge Day 5 - Blackout
Day 6 – Word

For Day 6, we were to pick a word and feature it in our tangle. I decided to go with “Zenuari” – what is more appropriate than that? It is cute, unique and well, better sounding than say, Zen-bruari? xD

Out came my calligraphy pen for this one ^^
Zenuari Challenge Day 6 - Word
Day 7 – Duotangle

Today’s challenge was done in real time.

I think my brain must have outran my own over-ambition, or quite equally possibly, it is just my brain has run away altogether – I blame the flu bug I caught!! – so I am back to tangling on a Bijou tile 😛

I enjoy Huggins more now, than I ever did before. Not too sure why, but Huggins seems to be the only grid based tangle I can manage to pull off without pulling out my hair 😛 Inapod was another tangle I hadn’t played with in a few months, so I decided to use it here 🙂

Zenuari Challenge Day 7 - Duotangle

More tortillion practice is required of me, I think.

Diva Challenge Wk 199 – UMT Hitch

For the challenge, I tried out Hitch for the first time.

As usual for me and most UMT challenges, I just simply could not get it to ‘look pretty’. It is a shame, I checked out some challenge entries before trying my hand at it, and they were just altogether lovely.

In the end, I decided to abandon the linear versions I was trying to accomplish and did a semi-grid, which turned out prettier than all my previous attempts. By which time, too, I was quite exhausted mentally and I just wanted to put down my Micron 😛 and so I kept it ultra plain and simple, for a change, which unexpectedly left me feeling quite satisfied.

Here’s Hitch with Rain and Beadlines, very simple and airy 🙂 I am charmed by how Hitch looks like a Celtic cross and also a dreamcatcher, at the same time.

I may or may not add to it later, but for now, I am all for it’s delicate, breezy look…..

Zentangles – Diva Challenge Wk 196, 197 & 198

After a couple of weeks of rushing custom jewelry orders and prepping for my final craft market booth for 2014 last Friday, I found that my right hand was severely strained from using craft pliers for long hours on a daily basis. From occasional numbness to a carpal tunnel like syndrome, I had to give up my nightly, pre-bedtime tangling in order to ‘conserve’ my right hand. Hence my temporary hiatus from the challenges.

On a whole, I’ve crafted more this year alone than in all my 32 years of life combined, and I never thought I’d be happy to announce that custom orders are now closed for the year, to enable me to finish up all existing orders and restock on supplies.

I am SO pleased to get to the challenges I’ve missed these couple of weeks. Well.. here we go.. (as always, clicking on the images will take you to Flickr)

Diva Challenge Week 196 – All Dolled Up

To be honest I had a really difficult time trying to come up with something for this particular challenge. It is not that I am not fond of dolls. I am a hobby collector myself, and I own several basic and limited edition Latidoll Yellow ball-jointed dolls (16cm) including a Lati Green Ronnie (30cm).

I’d thought very long and hard for this challenge before finally deciding to put together a little, miniature book of tangles for the Lati Green size.

It was very apt because I was planning to introduce a good friend of mine to Zentangles and I am in the midst of putting together a little starter kit cum care package for her and she too, has a Lati Green! Like me, she’s just gone through a really rough 18 months and I think that tangling will definitely help her attain some form of inner peace for herself.

This little book is still a work in progress and will contain some of my favourite tangle patterns when completed. It is slightly smaller than an official regular sized Zentangle tile, and about twice the size of a Bijou. It is made of mixed media paper, upcycled from various envelopes, packaging, old maps and scrap paper 🙂

I have about 8 more pages to go before it is ready to pose for photos with Alexis, my own Lati Green Ronnie 😛

If anyone is curious, here are some of the other goodies that I have managed to put together for my friend’s starter kit. I am intending to add more personalisation to it, over the next few days. (For a detailed list please click the image below.)

She does know, and I did tell her.. that I am definitely not going to be in time for Christmas, as it is way too late to send via International post, but it will eventually go out in January when the holiday postal traffic has died down.

Diva Challenge Wk 197 – Arukas

I went through some of the early ‘Arukas’ entries before coming to a decision to not post mine last Tuesday 😛 I must say that it made me cancel my already late blog posting 😛 This delay in posting did not make my attempts look any better, so I guess I should probably just admit defeat and put it up already 😛

I need more practice 😛 Not even old book paper could save it this time 😛

Diva Challenge Wk 198 – K.I.S.S.

For a gift exchange, we were supposed to include a Scripture verse with our gifts. I decided to make my own gifts and gift tags this year, and since it was a blind exchange, we were meant to have the gifts gender-neutral. I decided on an Angel-theme for the gifts, as there were non-Christians participating as well.

For the gift-tags, I made them as simple as possible, with duo-tangles in the borders 🙂 I also picked Angel-themed verses to match the gifts.

I chose this particular gift tag for my K.I.S.S. entry because it is the most simple of the designs ^^

Incoming ZIA Swaps

I just thought that I’d feature some of the wonderful tangles that I have been privileged to receive through the swaps that I participate in and/or host over Swapbot (affectionately known as SB to us swappers).

For example, how gorgeous is this stash of goodies from Haley, also known as Niwaliu, a talented tangler in Taiwan?? ^^ This veritable loot was sent to me over two swaps and includes postcards, twinchies and an ATC.

In another example, this ingenious hexagonal tile is from Anoeska, also known as Akseona, an equally talented tangler from Netherlands ^^ It is so cute, I have stashed it in a box for safekeeping!

Incoming ZIA Swaps ^^

Come and join my ZIA swaps if you like – you only need to sign up for a free account on Swap-bot and you are all set 🙂 We are having loads of fun! And since ZIA swaps are usually are really light and flat, they are cheap to send, internationally. If you have questions or issues, do let me know and I will see if I can help in any way.

To end off my post, once again, here are some other recent pieces before I visit other entries 🙂 If you are participating in my swaps on SB, I must again tell you that there are a number of spoilers ahead 😛

Zentangles – Diva Challenge Wk 195

Life often seems to throw the most unexpected things and the most unexpected times. Last week was one of those weeks.

Last Tuesday, I lost a friend.

I had just gotten to know him and his young family. They have a 3 year old. They are a very warm and inspiring couple and I was very much looking forward to getting to know them better, as we have some social gatherings over the next few months.

Our little group was all shocked into disbelief because it seemed like he was texting us about a Christmas party one moment in the late afternoon, and then 2 hours later we were told he was unconscious and they could not resuscitate him. By nightfall, he had returned home to the Lord. Everything happened in a span of a few short hours.

I was not close enough to him for me to grieve too deeply, but the suddenness of everything (they are such a lovely family) put a huge dampener on the rest of the week. I happened to be flooded with custom orders too, so I was kept fairly busy, but the whole time, my mind did not leave his family and the (seemingly) senselessness of their loss, even though I do agree that he is indeed in a better place.

Considering the situation and everything that was going on, I decided to spare myself the agony of last week’s “Embracing the Yuck” challenge.

I get that it might have been a good challenge for some, but no, thanks. I already have plenty of yuck around these parts as it is. Also, I did originally turn to Zentangles to calm down, create beauty and appreciate beauty in the mundane, not the yuck. Definitely.

This is my personal preference and has nothing to do with the Diva’s guest or the challenge being guest-issued – I’d also skipped the Diva’s original “non-dominatrix” (non-dominant hand) challenge when I was starting on the challenges from the beginning.

To be fair, I did try my hand at that old challenge, but gave up when I started getting frustrated and edgy because it completely killed off my inner calmness – the very calmness that for me is a challenge in itself to hang onto, each day.

I am so very happy to participate on this week’s challenge instead, which bears the title “Turning Old into New”.

I particularly like the hopefulness and positivity within the title itself, and was much happier to pick up my Microns this time.

For this week’s challenge, I drew a string onto my art journal, but did not really manage to keep to it, except for the borders. I had decided to use Pokeroot as a grid, and Sanibelle for my line border, which I think turned out quite pretty.

My Pokeroot is kinda half-spiral, half-grid(?) – I am not too sure which it resembles more, but I like it because it looks kind of like I am looking down at a bunch of Pokeroots from the top.

I ended up adding in Beadlines, which I wanted to present in a flowy grid, but did not succeed, and Shard/Shattuck which became a square.

Here we go.. (clicking on the images will take you to Flickr)

Zentangles – Diva Challenge Wk 193

This week the challenge celebrates the spirit of gratitude and thanksgiving with a TriTangle of Trio, Huggins and Xyp.

The past 17 months have been a constant exercise of willpower for me to focus on being thankful for the good things in my life, whilst putting up with the distractions of the bad 😛 I am still unwell (it does seem to be endless!) but I do agree that I have a lot to be thankful for.

This is my first time trying out all three tangles, and I found Trio to be the most challenging.

After a failing at all my attempts, I was getting more and more frustrated just trying to follow the original step outs for Trio. Eventually I gave up and decided it couldn’t BE that difficult to pick up. I decided to then deconstruct the pattern myself and reproduce it to the best of my abilities. I ended up starting on the right instead of left and, basically, ‘flipped’ most of the steps. I don’t know if it ‘works’ visually, but it looks much better than all my failed attempts combined.

Once I was confident enough, I used an official tile to create part of my string on an old book page. After tangling, I trimmed it and mounted it onto a postcard blank.

Here we go.. (clicking on the images will take you to Flickr)
